Artist's Portrait

I recently got in contact with a fantastic Glasgow based artist, Janie Nicoll, who is currently working in the WASPS artist's studios, South Block, in Glasgow's Merchant City. After a few email exchanges we had a date and a plan on doing a very quick and simple environmental portrait of her within her personalised studio space.

Before the shoot i had no idea what to expect, so i packed some small portable lighting kit, and some daylight modifiers as i knew i wanted to mix both flash and daylight to give the images a very natural and realistic feel. SInce i knew i was going to do some daylight images i brought along my Lumu Pocket light meter and i was totally invaluable.

After the wide shots and the detail shots, i then moved on to the main set of images. For these portraits i mainly used the Fuji 35mm 1.4 & and Fuji 56mm 1.2 lenses. These lenses give crystal clear sharpness, even when shooting wide open, which is very rare to get.

With both these images i used the Chimera Octa Beauty to the left hand side and then window light from the right. The SB910 speedlight was triggered using the Pocketwizard Plus III's.

With these natural light images i used the beautiful light coming though the massive windows of South Block. I didn't only want to capture Janie in these i wanted to capture her inspiration, her personality and her own, untouched and self styled space. I metered the scene, not with the camera meter but with my pocket iPhone light meter, the Lumu light meter. This little device lets me accurately and easily calculate my exposure to give me my desired results with film and digital.

I saw the light on the wall behind her and immediately knew i wanted to incorporate that in my images, as it highlights and adds emphasis to her work and thoughts placed all around the studio.

When shooting these images I used a 30 inch white reflector to the left of me just to add an evenness to the images. I didn't want to create a tense atmosphere with over powering shadows. For these images I wanted them to be as natural as possible, nothing too harsh and nothing too fake. I believe I got this spot on and i'm immensely proud of these images and this series of work.
